16-04: Health and Safety Hazard: Water in Flint, Michigan

On January 16, 2016, the president signed an emergency declaration for Genesee County, Michigan, which includes the city of Flint, due to contaminated water supply. Residents of Flint served by the city’s water system have been urged to no longer use the water due to high levels of lead and other contaminants. 

Effective immediately for all loan programs requiring an appraisal: For all loans located in Flint, Michigan, the lender must provide documentation evidencing the subject property is served by water that meets the requirements of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). 

Lenders may document that the subject property is serviced by a non-municipal water source, or provide satisfactory evidence, through an independent water quality analysis, that the water provided by the city is safe, potable and of appropriate quality for all household uses (drinking, cooking, bathing, etc.).
